Walk Leader Training

In May 2024, Ramblers introduced updated walk leader training requirements. We're delighted to say that all of our walk leaders have now completed this process — a huge thank you to every one of you who stepped up to do the training and continue leading walks for EKWG. Your commitment and generosity in volunteering your time is what makes our group's walks programme possible.
Your updated training record is valid for 3 years, after which you will need to renew. If you haven't yet completed the walk leader training, or you've not done any walk leading yet, that's no problem at all. We'll be more than happy to help you get organised with the training — just speak to Kerry our Walks Coordinator or Nick our Chairman.
Why This Matters
In order to be registered on Walks Manager as a qualified walk leader, you need to have completed the training. Without an updated training record, Ramblers will not cover you under their insurance while leading walks.
Your updated training record is valid for 3 years from the date it was completed, so you won't need to think about renewal for a while yet.
- If you have any questions about the process, please don't hesitate to speak to Kerry our Walks Coordinator or Nick our Chairman.
- You can also contact Ramblers directly at [email protected] for any queries about your training record.
- The 3 courses related to walk leading are summarised below and the yellow button will take you directly to the online training facility:
Preventing and Managing Incidents
In Preventing and Managing Incidents, you’ll find out how to minimise the risk of an incident when you’re leading a walk. You’ll hear from experienced walk leaders about what to take on your walk and gain tips for what to include in a first aid kit. It takes approximately 60 minutes to complete.
Walk Leader Handbook
The Walk Leader Handbook sets out 8 guiding principles that will help you lead walks with confidence. It takes you through what a walk leader needs to consider when planning and leading a group walk and draws on best practice from within Ramblers.
Walk Leadership Foundations
Walk Leadership Foundations is an interactive, online course that will give you the skills and knowledge to lead group walks with confidence.
The online training courses are available via the Training Library linked below. All walk leaders are now required to complete the training in order to be covered by Ramblers insurance while leading walks.
Important: Before clicking the Training Library button, you need to have already successfully logged in to the Ramblers national website. If you haven't done that yet, you'll first need to create a Ramblers account.
